"The Luncheon on the Grass"   Ye Su

2024.03.13-2024.04.14

"The Luncheon on the Grass" is a painting by the French artist Manet. Manet challenged the prevailing salon art style of his time through bold composition, even facing severe criticism, including from the French emperor, when the work was submitted to the "Salon des Refusés." As a versatile artist, Manet utilized a vivid and realistic painting style in works like "The Luncheon on the Grass," "Olympia," and "The Execution of Emperor Maximilian," thereby innovating the narrative force of painting.

As the eponymous inaugural exhibition of the White Paper Space, "The Luncheon on the Grass" was appropriated by artistYe Su to transform the exhibition into a story collection device called NUN (Narrative Unit Node). Visitors encountered unfamiliar national flags (NUN Flags), an upside-down map of the sea routes (NUN Map), and postcards depicting stories from around the world. These colorful postcards were created by artists first drawing black and white ink sketches based on storytellers' narratives, which were then digitally colored. The storytellers' lettered information was transformed into a location concept appearing on the NUN Map.In the exhibition, dozens of individual story images were scattered, fragmented, exciting, and real, with the potential for constant opening or extension. Here, the "image" resembles more the artist's output capacity, thereby diluting the closed loop and subjectivity of image production. As a growing open project, "The Luncheon on the Grass" will accept public submissions of new stories throughout its exhibition period, with each storyteller eventually receiving a postcard depicting their own story.
